GTA Module: Approaches to Teaching, Learning and Assessment

LTC offers a course which may be of interest to Graduate Teaching Assistants (Tutors / Demonstrators). The course is called the GTA Module: Approaches to Teaching, Learning and Assessment and is open to GTAs each year. Opting to study this module would be useful for anyone who is currently involved in teaching and is considering an academic career. The Module runs in the second semester and classes take place in the evening.

The GTA Module aims to allow participants to explore, in a structured manner, the teaching, learning and assessment literature and how it impacts on their own current practice. Successful completion of the Module may lead to exemption from some probationary requirements in other Higher Education institutions.

Core topics include:

Teaching and Learning in a Changing Academic Environment
Managing Teaching and Research
Student Learning
Course Design
Assessment and Feedback
Evaluation
Small Group Teaching
Laboratory Teaching

The Module was introduced in 1998 both in response to demands by GTAs for more training and in recognition of the increasing pressures upon academic staff to look towards accreditation with the Higher Education Academy.

The Module is equivalent to 15 Scotcat M credits.  The Module for the next academic session will commence 10th December 2008 with completion by May 2009.

There will be ten, two-hour seminars examining topics relevant to teaching in Higher Education at GTA level. These seminars will take place on Wednesdays between 5.30 pm and 7.30 pm. Each seminar has pre-seminar readings and activities, some of which are undertaken individually, but many of which require collaboration with other members of the group and with the students that you teach. It is required that you will be teaching in semester 2.

The aim is to make the Module as relevant to your current teaching needs as possible, whilst at the same time offering a grounding in the recent literature being produced on teaching in Higher Education.

The GTA Module team is in the process of applying for re-accreditation of the course, to allow automatic recognition for successful completion of the Module as an Associate of the Higher Education Academy.
