Explorations in Learning in HE

This document offers a summary review of four approaches to understanding learning in higher education:

  • a cognitive approach which is relevant to understanding issues of memory and learning, especially from lectures
  • a developmental approach which gives insight into how students change their understanding of the nature of knowledge and learning over the duration of a degree
  • a relational approach which illuminates the interaction between how students approach their learning and their learning outcomes
  • an academic literacies approach which shows how learning tasks, for example essay writing, are governed by implicit conventions which are not always apparent or familiar to all students.
