Central Unix system

The central Unix systems provide a variety of services to users on campus, including a well-tried and tested electronic mail service for those who do not have such a facility in their faculty or department..

  • The service is available to any member of staff or postgraduate student of the University of Glasgow.
  • There is no charge for basic use, e.g. electronic mail. Use of any applications software may be chargeable.
  • There is a default free filestore allocation of 10 Mb for staff, 5 Mb for postgraduate students and 2.5 Mb for undergraduate students.
  • Additional filestore is available for rental at £2.00 per megabyte per academic year.

About
Unix is a multi-user, multi-tasking operating system with many useful facilities. It can be run on numerous different types of computer system and provides a powerful and flexible computing environment in which to work. .

The central Unix systems comprise a number of general-purpose servers that are connected together to form the Unix Distributed Computing Facility (UDCF) as well as being connected to the campus backbone network.

Within UDCF the general log-in and IT services are provided by a Quad CPU SPARC server1000 known as lenzie.

Additional Sun SPARC stations provide transparent access to services such as electronic mail, DNS  and the WWW
