Backing up your data
Don’t lose your work!
It takes time and effort to produce that essay or report that is due now. How would you feel if you lost the file containing all your work? Back up! Keep a copy of everything stored on your computer by saving again on to a different storage area.
Network Filestore
In the CSCE you have acces to yor own file store. where you can store documents and electronic mail messages. Drive H: is allocated for this purpose. (My Documents folder). The current limit on this store is 100Mb. This filestore is backed up for you by IT services.
Portable Storage
You should also back up to a portable storage system because:
1) The computer you are on may crash (rare nowadays but can still happen) or you may make some mistake which deletes or damages some files.
2) This allows you to carry a file to another computer not on the network. For instance if you use a computer at home as well as on campus.
3) Back up regularly, even while you work, so that if the worst happens you will lose the minimum amount of work.
Portable storage options normally available on campus are:
Disk drives: usually only available for PCs with CD R/W drives.
USB “pen” storage device ports.
