About the ECDL

So what exactly is ECDL and how does it work?

ECDL is a European-wide qualification that enables people to demonstrate their competence in IT skills. Just like the car driving test, there are Test Centres around Britain where candidates can sign-up and come along to be examined. IT Services is an accredited Test Centre and can offer candidates tests in our well-equipped computer laboratories. Candidates need not have undertaken training with IT Services.

What are the benefits?

ECDL is designed to help people at work and at home. It will confirm to potential employers that the person has a professionally recognised, relevant and up-to-date qualification.

What do I need to know to pass the tests?

Candidates should be familiar with the syllabus that will be examined: each of ECDL's 7 modules has a published syllabus:

  • Basic concepts of IT
  • Using the computer and managing files
  • Word processing
  • Spreadsheets
  • Databases
  • Presentations
  • Information and Communication.

Take a look at the Complete Syllabus for full details for each module.

What if I need training before I sit the tests?

A number of IT Services' regular courses are suitable for those preparing for ECDL.  Course details can be found on our main Training web page.

Also, when you sign up you will be issued with a complete set of self-teach materials.

Registering your interest in ECDL does not mean you are signing up for a particular training course. IT Services does not offer an "ECDL course" as such; all you are doing is letting us know you are interested in ECDL.  We will then send you an email outlining the costs, methods of funding and study and how to proceed.  You can then decide if you wish to sign up formally.   As mentioned on our ECDL homepage, you will then have to sit tests for 7 modules and will have 3 years from the date of your first successful test in which to complete.
