Board of Review - Honorary Professorships

Glasgow School of Art: An Associated Institution

1. General Principles

1.1 The Court of the University of Glasgow, on the recommendation of the University Board of Review may confer the title of Honorary Professor on an individual nominated in accordance with the Glasgow School of Art procedures detailed in paragraph 2 below

1.2 Those appointed as Honorary Professors should satisfy in general terms the intent of the University's professorial criteria, and on appointment will be associated with the sponsoring school or department within the Glasgow School of Art.

1.3 Those appointed to Honorary Professorships at the Glasgow School of Art will not normally come from the academic world; it is more likely that they will be practitioners in the field of Architecture, Art and Design, broadly defined.

1.4 The duration of an Honorary Professorship will normally be five years or such lesser period as may be agreed. Honorary Professors may be considered for re-appointment at the end of their term of office.

1.5 Honorary Professors will normally be expected to spend a minimum of one week per year in the relevant school/department and actively engage with the school/department at other times. Activities may include, giving a "keynote" lecture, and conducting staff and student seminars.

1.6 Honorary Professors will normally be expected to identify a particular research domain, which will be the focus of their relationship with the school/department. Active research collaborations may emerge from this.

1.7 Honorary Professors will receive an honorarium of £1,000 (taxable) per annum plus expenses. This will be met from the budget of the school/department to which the Honorary Professor is attached.

1.8 Where the Honorary Professor's level of engagement is more significant than the activities outlined in paragraphs 1.5 and 1.6 above, an additional fee may be negotiated. This will be met from the budget of the relevant school/department.
