Consequences of the Data Protection Act

For the individual, the Data Protection Act:

  • gives new rights over the use of personal data about themselves;

  • gives new rights over access to personal data about themselves;

  • provides protection from unwanted or harmful uses of personal data about themselves;

  • provides protection from secondary uses of personal data about themselves;

  • requires personal data to be collected and used in a responsible and accountable manner.
