Consent for Pictures & Photographs

The University collects and processes information, including images, about its students and staff for academic, administrative, managerial, pastoral, and health and safety reasons. This processing is covered by the University's Notification to the Information Commissioner or other provisions of the Act. No additional consent is required.

An image, such as a picture or photograph of an Individual, may in certain circumstances be considered as personal data about that Individual and subject to the Data Protection Act. See seperate entry, Pictures and Photographs, in this A to Z Guide.

Any use, such as for inclusion in University publicity & marketing material, of an image that is classified as personal data may be subject to the consent of the Individual. A signed statement, based on that below, may be advisable especially if the image contains significant biographical information or its use will adversely intrude on their privacy:


"The image(s) may be retained by, and will only be accessed by, authorised persons of the University of Glasgow or its agents and may be used in the future in University publications and marketing materials. The image(s) will only be retained for the stated purpose. The image(s) are processed by the University in accordance with the provisions of the Data Protection Act 1998.

Where a photographic session, perhaps including video & film clips, is being undertaken in an open area then it is advised that notices, warning individuals that filming is taking place & that they should not enter the area if they do not want to be included in the session, are planted at all entry points to the area.
