The University of Glasgow Careers Service aims to enhance the employability of the University's students and graduates. It aims to do this through a quality service that:

  • Helps students and recent graduates develop and make appropriate use of career management skills, thereby enhancing their ability to identify options most appropriate to them
  • Collaborates with academic staff and employers in the development of curricula which provide undergraduates and postgraduates with key skills and self-awareness in order to increase their employability
  • Informs the University and the wider community of changes in the graduate employment market
  • Markets students and graduates of the university to all types of employers and training providers

Our commitment to you

The University of Glasgow Careers Service follows guidelines laid down by our professional body, AGCAS (Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services). This guarantees a quality service that is impartial, confidential, friendly, client centered and delivered by professionally trained staff. We work to a Code of Practice that deals with Best Practice in Graduate Recruitment and Equal Opportunities, for further details refer to AGCAS.

Graduates of more than two years: lifetime use of the Information Centre. Guidance appointments with a Careers Adviser are available outwith term-time from July to mid September.

Graduates of more than five years: lifetime use of the Information Centre. Alternatively you can contact Careers Scotland.

Graduates of Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian and University of the West of Scotland: you will have access to the Careers Service at your own university so we are unable to offer you access to our Careers Service.

Graduates of other UK universities: if you are living in the Glasgow area you are welcome to use to the Information Centre. If you need to see an adviser contact your university's Careers Service.

Current Students at all other UK universities: you will have access to the Careers Service at your own university so we are unable to offer you access to our Careers Service.

What you can expect from us

  • If eligible for a guidance appointment, this can be a twenty or forty minute confidential interview with a Careers Adviser to discuss career planning or to enhance your job search. Opening hours during the summer months are shorter, so check our website for up to date times.
  • The Information Centre offers unlimited access to paper and web based resources. We will keep this up-to-date and relevant with dedicated staff who can help if problems arise.
  • If you have a disability and cannot access our information in its current format we will endeavour to obtain it in a format that is suitable to you.
  • We will continue to develop our website as an information resource and career planning tool with appropriate weblinks to extend your search.
  • Access to a Careers Seminar programme, delivered in conjunction with employers. Priority will be given to our current students and recent graduates.
  • We will make available vacancies for employment after graduation through our websites.
  • We will organise and/or promote employer recruitment seminars and information events, and the Summer Graduate Fair in Scotland.

What we can expect from you

  • We would expect you to prepare for any appointment with a Careers Adviser as outlined on our pre-interview cards available at reception and follow through any recommended action points before making another appointment.
  • If you cannot attend a guidance appointment, let us know as soon as possible so it can be offered to someone else.
  • If you cannot find information you are looking for or require it in an alternative format, let us know.
  • We expect you to use PC's and internet access for career related matters and not for personal use.
  • We would expect you to sign up for seminars and employer presentations on the Careers Service web site. If you subsequently cannot attend you should cancel on-line or contact us as soon as possible. For some employer seminars we require a £5 deposit, this will be returned on attendance. If the seminar should be cancelled we would expect you to come to the Careers Service to collect your deposit.
  • It is your responsibility to check the Careers Service website, read our regular free publications and check your e-mail for vacancies and notices.
  • In January or April we ask graduates to fill in a questionnaire telling us what they are doing for our Destination Statistics. Not only are we required to do this by the government, but also it provides us with invaluable information on the graduate labour market.
