Psychology (Glasgow Caledonian University)
- All students – Voluntary Work & Mentoring Scheme. The Voluntary Work and Mentoring Scheme (VWMS) aims to give BSc Psychology students the opportunity to undertake relevant work experience in voluntary or educational organisations whilst they are studying. The scheme acts as a facilitator for students obtaining this experience by seeking out and promoting opportunities to students who then apply to the organisations directly.
- Two Credited (Self Directed) Reflective Learning Modules:
- Level 3 students – Psychology Related Work Experience. This module is designed to allow students who are undertaking appropriate psychology related voluntary or mentoring work to learn through reflecting on the experience, and articulating what of value they are learning from the experience.
- Level 2 students – Work and Psychology. This module is designed to allow students who are undertaking paid work alongside their studies to learn through reflecting on the experience, and articulating what of value they are learning from the experience. The module aims to recognise and reward the range of learning opportunities relevant to the study of psychology that can be achieved in the workplace.
Types of voluntary opportunities that employers may consider suitable include (but not exclusively):
- Befriending
- Mentoring
- Working in education
- Advocacy
- Helping at a support group
- Providing support to people in a variety of ways, e.g. to get back to work, to volunteer themselves, who are going through the judicial process.
How?
The team at Glasgow Caledonian are seeking to engage with employers who can offer Psychology students relevant and useful work experience of a caring or helping nature which will allow them to develop key transferable and work-related skills, e.g. interpersonal or communication skills.
