Physics (University of St. Andrews)
The School of Physics & Astronomy currently offers many work-related learning activities. The School is now keen to offer students a much wider range of work-related opportunities and strategies and also to explore how to embed work-related learning (WRL) most effectively within the School. Attracted to the idea of introducing WRL within a PDP framework, the School is also keen to try other approaches that may be adopted within the project, and is open to the idea of extending credit-bearing modules, including giving credit for professional work experience.
Types of opportunities employers may consider suitable are:
- Engaging with students as part of a course lecture
- Participating in Careers events, for example a Careers Fair
- Hosting visits at their location
- Offering vacation work placements and job shadowing opportunities
- Providing graduate job opportunities and information and assistance on applying for them.
How?
The School of Physics & Astronomy is working with a WRL champion from the University Careers Centre who will introduce a range of other perspectives and strategies and, in due course, enable the learning resulting from the project to be disseminated to other schools. This project provides an opportunity to advance the School’s strategic objective of improving the employability of its students through establishing the most effective ways of enabling students to benefit from WRL.
The team is seeking to engage with employers who can offer students a chance to broaden their horizons and build enthusiasm for pursuing a career that uses the knowledge and skills they have developed through their study of the physical sciences.
