UNIVERSITY of GLASGOW

School of Historical Studies

History of medicine

This cluster is closely identified with Centre for the History of Medicine, the major institutional venue in Scotland for the study of the history of medicine. It also includes other members of the School working on the epidemiology of plague and the history of science.  The core research areas of the Centre are:

  • The modern history of the medical and nursing professions
  • Obstetrics and child health
  • Technology and medicine in the 20th century
  • Scottish medical history

Other research interests can be accomodated and the Centre is developing a focus on the history of old age and the end of the life course.

The Centre offers a M.Litt/M.Sc. programme with funded places, sponsors Wellcome and ESRC-funded research students and postdoctoral fellows and hosts a regular seminar and workshop series, an annual conference, and other scholarly events.  The Centre has been awarded 'Group' status by the Wellcome Trust and received a major Wellcome enhancement award in 2004.  Members of this cluster collaborate with the nearby Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, the Royal College of Nursing, and the curators of the Greater Glasgow Health Board archives held by the University's Archives Services.
