School of Historical Studies
The School of Historical Studies coordinates the research and postgraduate teaching activities of staff involved in History at the University of Glasgow and its archives. In departmental terms, the School includes:
- Department of History (Faculty of Arts)
- Department of Economic and Social History (Faculty of Law, Business and Social Science)
- University Archive Services
Historians at the University of Glasgow's Crichton campus in Dumfries also participate in the School. Together the School's academic staff comprise one of the largest groups of historians in Britain with some 42 full-time and several part-time members of staff.
The University's Archive Services hold the records of the university from its founding in 1451 to the present along with other collections of interest to researchers in the School of Historical Studies. These include the Scottish Business Archive and the Greater Glasgow Health Board records.
The headship of the School rotates between the heads of its constituent departments. The current head (2007-8) is Dr. Neil Rollings of the Department of Economic and Social History.
Research Clusters
The research interests of academic staff in the School cluster in the following areas:
- Medieval European history
- Medieval Scotland, Ireland and the British Isles
- Cultures, beliefs and ideas in early modern Scotland and its wider contexts
- American history and culture
- History of medicine
- Social and gender history
- The international history of modern business and banking
- War studies
Research Centres
Many staff in the School engage in research and teaching with colleagues from other departments through interdisciplinary Research Centres. Research Centres pursue a variety of activities, from the sponsorship of seminar series and conferences to the employment of postgraduate students and research fellows in grant-funded research projects.

Postgraduate Teaching and Supervision
The School offers both taught and research postgraduate degrees in History. These include the one-year MLitt/MSc and the three-year PhD. Degrees can be taken on a full or part-time basis.
