Lusophone African Film Festival

Gilmorehill G12 - 31 October to 2 November 2008

Highlights include a pre-screening talk with the Mozambican director Gabriel Mondlane (31st October) and the film-maker Noe Mendelle, form the Edinburgh College of Art, who will speak on the new Angolan music (2nd November).

The event is sponsored by the Instituto Camões, and is supported by Africa in Motion, Afrika Eye and the various directors and producers of the films.

Free entry to all events.

‘On a Non-theory of Translation’

Richard Zenith, who recently published an article titled “Notes for a Non-theory of Translation”, will speak about some general guidelines for translating (which do not amount to a theory) and then discuss, or stimulate a discussion, about practical problems posed by a sonnet or two by Luís de Camões and several short passages by Fernando Pessoa. Participants do not need to know Portuguese.

‘The People in Pessoa’s Trunk’

When Portuguese writer Fernando Pessoa died in 1935, he left over 25,000 mostly unpublished manuscript sheets, signed by over seventy names, many of which had distinct personalities and writing styles. To what extent was this a literary game? To what extent a psychological phenomenon? Richard Zenith, a leading researcher in Pessoa’s archives, will address these and other questions.

“Roots and Labyrinths: Interpreting Interpretations of Latin America”

The renowned essayist, literary critic and poet Silviano Santiago will speak on two defining Latin-American works: Sérgio Buarque  de Hollanda’s Roots of Brazil and Octávio Paz’ in Labyrinth of Solitude.  With an interdisciplinary approach, Santiago’s latest work pays homage to these important Latin American critics whilst offering a new interpretation of these old masters.

Hispanic Studies Seminar Series 2006/07

Dr. Andrew Durgan (Universidad Central of Barcelona)

'The International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War; myth and reality'

Andrew Durgan has written widely on the Spanish Civil War, and was the historical adviser to Ken Loach during the making of his 1997 film ‘Land and Freedom’. 30-40,000 people fought with the International Brigades between 1936 and 1939; they came from many countries, including an important Scottish contingent. Dr Durgan will discuss their role in the war and their political significance in Spain and beyond, both during the war and since.
