Background

David Donnison and Julian Tudor Hart have been giants in their fields for most of the history of the NHS and British Welfare State. On this special occasion, we ask if Britain is still a generous society? Does the gift economy, as described by Richard Titmuss have a future? As the market is being promoted in England and rejected in Scotland, what are the roles for professionalism, accountability, advocacy and democracy in charting the way forward?

Pre-reading

Before coming to this meeting, you may wish to read Worlds of difference (Lancet 2008 371 1883-1885) by Julian Tudor Hart and David Donnison's response, and Google both participants to catch up on two outstanding careers in public service.
