Undergraduate Study of French
French involves the study of a key European and international language and its culture.
At all levels of study you will have the opportunity to advance in your understanding and use of the language, both written and oral, and will study current French culture and civilisation and that of previous centuries.
If you have not studied French before, you will be catered for in a class specially designed for beginners and near-beginners with an emphasis on intensive language acquisition. A good performance in the beginners’ course allows you to continue with French in second year and potentially on to Honours level.
If you progress to Honours you are usually required to spend a year’s residence abroad (an additional year before entering Junior Honours). Thereafter the Honours course (years four and five) offers a significant degree of choice including literature, cinema, cultural and postcolonial studies, recent history and politics and modern thought.
Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, small group tutorials and seminars.
