Research in French
The French Section at Glasgow offers a broad spectrum of expertise and supervision from the Middle Ages to the contemporary period, on poetry, the novel, theatre and performance studies, Quebec studies, language studies, cultural studies, theory and thought, and visual cultures including emblems, fine art and cinema. There is a lively research culture, with regular seminars and visiting speakers. The Section offers support to postgraduate students for conference attendance and research trips both home and abroad. The city of Glasgow, European City of Culture in 1990, is an exciting place to live and spend time and the University library offers outstanding facilities and resources.
The Section hosts conferences on a regular basis, including the 2003 Montreal-Glasgow conference, not to mention postgraduate events such as 'Les Usages du genre'. French is also involved in various funded projects and initiatives, for example the Centre for Emblem Studies which has recently completed its three-year digitisation project.
SMLC French is the home of Glasgow French and German Publications, as well as the following journals and learned societies:
- Le Nouveau Moliériste
- International Society for Emblems Studies Newsletter
- Glasgow Emblem Studies
- Lev Shestov Journal (Cahiers Léon Chestov)
French has many interdisciplinary links with other Sections in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures, as well as other departments and centres in the University such as English Literature, History, and Theatre, Film and Television Studies, the Centre for Emblem Studies and the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies.
