Creative Writing Postgraduate Programme

Welcome to the University of Glasgow's Creative Writing Programme.

The University of Glasgow has provided an excellent creative writing environment for postgraduate students for well over a decade. Our Masters and PhD provisions are some of the most challenging and popular in the country.  The programme is centred on the Edwin Morgan Writing Room with its book, periodical and audio-visual library.  There is a programme of visiting speakers, masterclasses and public events.

The Masters in Creative Writing was founded in 1995.  It is offered on a full-time or a part-time basis (one year or two years) and we hope to make it available full-time by Distance Learning from October 2008.

It is part of a comprehensive Creative Writing provision, from the Undergraduate Honours course to the Glasgow Creative PhD programme, with routes in Novel and Poetry Writing, which incorporate taught elements (workshops, tutorials and seminars). There is a long history of highly successful PhDs by research in Creative Writing as well.  Follow this link for more information on Creative Writing research in SESLL.

Students enjoy access to the best of the new and also develop a sense of the origins and histories of the genres they practice. They enjoy the guidance of writers and critics including John Coyle, Mike Gonzales, Laura Marney, Willy Maley, Rob Maslen, Kei Miller, Colette Paul, Andrew Radford, Elizabeth Reeder, Michael Schmidt and Zoe Strachan.

They meet and engage with visiting writers from around the globe, including in recent and coming months Margaret Atwood, Eavan Boland, Peter Davidson, Lorna Goodison, Kirsty Gunn, Toby Litt, Bernard MacLaverty, Harry Mathews, Maggie O'Farrell, Andrew O'Hagan, Sharon Olds, Alice Quinn, Ian Rankin, Christopher Ricks, Jane Stevenson, Louise Welsh and Zoe Wicombe, and a number of outstanding editors, journalists and agents from Britain at large.
