Undergraduate study

Staff in Community Based Sciences contribute to various aspects of the undergraduate medical, dental and nursing curriculums at Glasgow University:

General Practice & Primary Care

  • Contributes in all years of the undergraduate MBChB curriculum
  • In years 1 and 2, up to 60 GP undergraduate tutors deliver Vocational Studies.
  • In Years 3,4 and 5, up to 180 GP tutors provide clinical placements for students
  • We contribute to development, delivery, assessment and evaluation in all years of the curriculum.
  • A member of the section is Head of School and two other members are Course Directors
  • We support students who self-propose SSMs
  • We have a programme of undergraduate medical education research.

Psychological Medicine

  • Contributes to undergraduate training within the Medical, Dental and Nursing and Midwifery schools with the aim of ensuring that all undergraduates in these schools have a strong grounding in applied psychology, psychiatry and behavioural science relevant to professional practice in medicine, dentistry and nursing.
  • Offers the BMedSci Psychological Medicine intercalated degree programme for medical undergraduates who are seeking to extend their knowledge in the area of mental health research and practice.

Public Health & Health Policy

  • Contributes to undergraduate education in the Faculty with the aim of introducing concepts and issues in public health to students in medicine and nursing. This is achieved through:
    • The intercalated degree of BSc (MedSci)  in  clinical medicine is offered to  medical students at the end of third years. As part of the degree students may choose to specialise in public health which includes specialist teaching and a research project.
    • A range of Special Study Modules which are offered to undergraduate students. (We also work with individual students to help them develop their own SSMs in later years.)
    • Specific teaching on public health at various points in the undergraduate MBCHB curriculum including examinations in the first and final years.
  • Contributes to teaching in the Bachelor of Nursing degree in Year 1.
