How to Apply

All applicants should complete the standard online application for admission to postgraduate taught and research degree programmes within the Faculty of Medicine Graduate School; see the Graduate School website for further details on how to apply.

Project Title

SINAPSE-funded 3 year PhD Studentship in Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy in Treatment Resistive Depression.

Supervisor(s):

Dr Barrie Condon

Division(s):

Division of Clinical Neuroscience

Magnetic Resonance (MR) Spectroscopy can be used to non-invasively measure metabolite concentrations in the living human brain and has the potential to detect concentration changes caused by psychiatric conditions such as depression. However such changes are subtle and close to the level of detection of existing techniques. The aim of this project is to rigorously develop and assess strategies to optimise and standardise the acquisition and analysis of this in vivo data.
The project will involve training in a range of techniques relevant to a career in Neuroimaging including MR imaging and spectroscopy.
The student will be primarily based in the Institute of Neurological Sciences in Glasgow as part of a multidisciplinary group of Neuroimaging scientists.

The successful applicant will have a first or upper second class honours degree in Physics or a related discipline.
Further details can be obtained by contacting Dr Barrie Condon, tel: +44 (0)141 201 2127.
Applicants should submit a CV including e-mail addresses of 2 referees.

Project Title

SINAPSE-funded 3 year PhD Studentship in Functional Brain Mapping

Supervisor(s):

Dr Barrie Condon

Division(s):

Division of Clinical Neuroscience

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) offers a non-invasive means of providing profound insights into the workings of the human brain. However it requires accurate identification of the brain areas which are activated by carefully designed cognitive tasks. This is not straightforward as there is considerable variation in normal brain anatomy which means that areas of activation may be misidentified. The aim of this project is to investigate and better incorporate these variations into the functional analysis.
The project will involve training in a range of techniques relevant to a career in Neuroimaging including fMRI acquisitions and image analysis.
The student will be primarily based in the Institute of Neurological Sciences in Glasgow as part of a multidisciplinary group of Neuroimaging scientists.
The successful applicant will have a first or upper second class honours degree in Physics, Maths, Informatics, Electrical engineering, Psychology or a related discipline.

Further details can be obtained by contacting Dr Barrie Condon, tel: +44 (0)141 201 2127.
Applicants should submit a CV including e-mail addresses of 2 referees.
