Clinical Stroke

The clinical Stroke Research Group of the Division of Clinical Neurosciences is located at the Institute of Neurological Sciences, Glasgow, where the acute stroke service for South Glasgow is located.

The stroke unit has more than 600 acute admissions per annum and has a strong track record of delivery of hyperacute stroke treatment, currently administering thrombolytic therapy to more patients than any other UK unit (average 6 per month, approximately 15% of ischaemic stroke admissions), and ranking fifth in Europe in treatment numbers on the SITS-ISTR register.

The research group has a strong record of patient recruitment into acute clinical trials. The clinical service is integrated with the Department of Neuroradiology and has undertaken imaging based trials involving acute MRI and CTP. Neuroradiology has both 1.5T and 3.0T clinical MRI systems as well as 64-slice CT for routine brain and vascular imaging.

Current major interests include:

  • hyperglycaemia in the acute phase of stroke and correlation with brain imaging findings
  • clinical application of CT perfusion
  • development of novel MRI-based metabolic imaging for acute stroke
  • thrombolytic therapy
  • CADASIL
The group includes three stroke research nurses and two Clinical Research Fellows.
