Preparing for Study: Information for new postgraduate students (2008-09)

We are looking forward to meeting you in September and hope you will find the information below useful in helping you to get started on your programme of studies in our Department.

Important dates in September 2008

Wed 10
Mon 15
  • Start of a one-week introduction programme for the Social Science Statistics course for all new students on the MRes and PhD programmes.
  • Departmental induction session for new MRes/PhD students (3pm, Seminar Room, 8-9 Lilybank Gardens).  This will be an opportunity to meet Departmental staff and your fellow students.
Thu 18
  • Registration for MSc/International Masters/MRes students. Specific times for registration depend on your last name (online timetable). If you are a part-time student, you can also register on Tuesday 16 September any time between 16.00 and 18.00.
Mon 22
  • Teaching begins for Social Sciences Statistics 1(MRes/PhD students only);
  • Departmental induction session for new MSc/International Masters students (3pm, Seminar Room, 8-9 Lilybank Gardens). This will be an opportunity to meet Departmental staff and your fellow students.  Relevant course documentation will also be distributed at this meeting.
Tue 23
  • Teaching begins for the Qualitative Methods course (MRes/PhD students only).
Wed 24
  • Teaching begins for the MSc/International Masters programme.
  • Departmental Reception for Postgraduate Students (Evening reception, time and venue to be announced).
Thu 25
  • Registration for PhD students. Specific times for registration depend on your last name (online timetable).
  • Induction, including a social event on the evening of Thursday 25 September which will give you a chance to meet your fellow students and members of the Department in an informal and relaxed setting.
Fri 26
  • University of Glasgow Welcome Social Event for new postgraduate students, 6-8pm. Venue to be announced.

Important dates in October 2008

Fri 31
  • Ceilidh (Scottish Dancing) from 7.30pm in the Glasgow University Student Union.

Do you require further information?

The International and Postgraduate Service can answer any questions you may have regarding the status of your application and also publishes a useful Frequently Asked Questions list. If you have any academic questions, you can contact your programme convener (for MSc/MRes/International Masters contact Dr Clare McManus-Czubinska and for questions concerning the PhD programme contact Dr Jon Oldfield). Our Departmental Administrator Maggie Baister will also answer any general questions you may have.
