(Click here for entry requirements, the application process, and scholarships)

The Department offers a one-year course of research training at masters level for research-oriented students, and for those who wish to pursue a research-based career in the region, with or without the completion of a PhD. The course combines elements of generic training in quantitative and qualitative methods, provided through the Law, Business and Social Sciences Graduate School, with specialised training in Research Methods for Studying Russia and Central and Eastern Europe, language training and a dissertation all provided from within the Department of Central and East European Studies.

The course provides training in a choice of Czech, Estonian, Hungarian, Latvian, Polish, Russian and Slovak with teaching available both for beginners and for those with an existing knowledge of any of these languages. Language study is a compulsory component of the MRes degree.

Students not requiring language training (i.e. native speakers / those with a degree in one of the region's languages) will take the MSc core course, State and Society under Communism: Social and Economic Frameworks. In addition, students may, if they wish sit in on any of the substantive course options offered in the Department's MSc programme, which they feel are of particular interest to them. The MRes course is compulsory for all students in receipt of ESRC 1+3 funding. It is also strongly recommended to all other research students beginning a PhD in the Department.
