Section of Pathology and Gene Regulation

Head of Section: Professor Barry Gusterson

This section is developing a strong basic research programme that is relevant to potential future clinical applications, through the understanding of mechanisms of carcinogenesis, the development of new diagnostics or the identification of novel therapeutic targets. The emphasis is on cell cycle regulation and epigenetic gene regulation. There is a strong association with human tumour pathology to produce a research environment that ensures rapid transfer from mechanistic studies to application.

The Section is closely associated with the CRUK Beatson Institute for Cancer Research and is funded by grants from the Wellcome Trust, BBSRC, MRC, AICR, the European Union and Breakthrough Breast Cancer. Research teams are located in refurbished laboratories at the University of Glasgow/NHS Western Infirmary and Beatson Institute (Garscube) campuses.
