Accounting and Finance
The Department of Accounting and Finance is one of the longest established accounting departments in the UK and has earned a respected reputation for quality within both academic and professional accounting circles. Founded in 1925 with the establishment of the Johnstone Smith Chair of Accountancy, the Department of Accounting and Finance initially offered courses for those wishing to enter the accountancy profession.
The Department’s teaching was deemed to be ‘highly satisfactory’ in the most recent Government quality assurance assessment, the highest grading of any accounting department in the west of Scotland. The teaching of the Department is enhanced by our active relationship with the business community, by the portfolio of postgraduate courses on offer, which attract students from all over the world, and by a strong research ethos. The Department received a 5 in the Government’s last research assessment exercise, recognising our national and international reputation in accounting and finance research; an important factor in our postgraduate provision. Research projects have been sponsored or financed by organisations such as the Economic and Social Research council, major international accounting firms, the major professional accounting bodies in the UK and North America, the Overseas Development Administration and the United Nations.
Economic and Social History
The Department of Economic and Social History was established in 1957 and is a leading centre of research and teaching. As part of the School of History and Archaeology, the Department received a 5 rating in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise. It is based in the newly refurbished Lilybank House.
The Centre for Business History (CBH), Scotland's only research unit in the discipline was inaugurated in 1987 through generous funding made available to the University of Glasgow by the Aggregate Foundation, a Charitable Trust which also provides the Centre's operating revenue.
The prime objective of the CBH is to encourage, facilitate and conduct research in all aspects of business history, with particular emphasis on corporate governance, innovation and organisational change. Developments in Scotland and the UK are naturally of considerable interest here, but comparative and international dimensions are central to the Centre's research programme.
Economics

Members of the Department of Economics have been research collaborators and consultants to a number of international and government organisations around the world and private sector institutions, including the IMF, World Bank, United Nations (UNDP, FAO), United Nations University - World Institute for Development Economics Research, Commonwealth Secretariat, numerous central banks, including the European Central Bank, HM Treasury and the Department of Trade and Industry of the government of UK, the Scottish Executive, the Welsh Assembly Government and Northern Ireland government, European Commission, a number of government organisations in developing countries and numerous London –based private sector financial institutions.
